Saturation Diver Day Rate in the Gulf of America (Gulf of Mexico) (2026)

Saturation diving is the highest-paid job in commercial diving and the most misreported. This guide puts every published figure side by side, with its source and date, and explains how a day rate turns into annual pay.

Typical day rate $1,000–$1,500+
Max. saturation 28 days (DMAC)
Annual cap 182 sat days / 12 mo
Official wage data All divers only
Short answer

Published sources put Gulf of America (Gulf of Mexico) saturation diver pay at roughly $1,000 to $1,500+ per day[2][4], earned in saturations that normally last up to 28 days[10]. Annual estimates range from about $50,000 on salary aggregators[5] to $117,000 on average and $164,000+ for top earners according to a Houston dive school[2]. The U.S. government does not publish saturation-specific pay or day rates; its median for all commercial divers is $72,990 (2025)[1].

01. How saturation diver pay is structured

Saturation divers are paid for days in saturation, not for a 40-hour week. Total pay usually combines several parts[2][4]:

Why there is no single official number
The Bureau of Labor Statistics groups saturation divers with all commercial divers (SOC 49-9092) and reports hourly and annual wages only – no day rates and no saturation-only figures[1]. Every day rate on this page therefore comes from schools, employers’ job ads or industry publications.

02. Published pay figures, side by side

The table below lists every figure we could trace to a source. They disagree, sometimes by more than double, so the source and scope matter as much as the number.

Figures as published by each source. We do not adjust or average them.

Why the gap? Aggregators such as ZipRecruiter estimate pay from job titles in ads, which can sweep in tenders, inland divers and trainees. Dive schools and offshore sources describe experienced divers on offshore day rates. Neither is “wrong”; they measure different people.

03. From day rate to annual pay: a worked example

Annual pay depends mostly on how many days a diver spends in saturation. International guidance says one saturation should normally not exceed 28 days, and cumulative saturation should not exceed 182 days in any 12 months[10]. Using a $1,300 day rate (the low end of Ocean Corp’s peak range[2]):

ScenarioDays in saturationDay-rate pay (gross)
One 28-day saturation28$36,400
Three 28-day saturations84$109,200
Guidance ceiling (182 days)182$236,600

Simple arithmetic (days × $1,300), before depth pay, per diem, overtime and taxes. An illustration, not a pay offer or a statistic.

This is why published annual figures spread so widely: two divers with the same day rate can earn very different amounts depending on how much saturation work they get in a year.

04. How long a saturation lasts and how deep it goes

05. How divers qualify for saturation work

There is no direct entry into saturation diving. Divers usually progress from tender to air diver to mixed-gas diver, then to bell/saturation work after company training; “most diving contractors require several years of experience as an air diver or mixed gas diver before advancing”[3].

The ADCI Bell/Saturation Diver card, used widely in the Gulf, lists these minimum requirements[9]:

06. Frequently Asked Questions

What is the day rate for a saturation diver in the Gulf of America (Gulf of Mexico)? ↓

Published sources put it at roughly $1,000 to $1,500 or more per day, with Ocean Corp citing $1,300 to $1,500+ in peak demand. Depth pay, per diem and overtime are added on top. These are industry estimates, not official statistics.

How much does a saturation diver make per year? ↓

It depends mainly on how many days the diver spends in saturation. Ocean Corp reports an average of about $117,261, with top earners at $164,000 or more. Salary aggregators show much lower figures (about $50,000 to $55,000) because they likely include non-saturation roles.

How long does a saturation dive last? ↓

International guidance (DMAC 21) says a saturation should normally not exceed 28 days, with no more than 182 days of saturation in any 12 months. Decompression takes roughly one day per 100 feet of seawater plus a day.

Does the BLS publish saturation diver day rates? ↓

No. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports hourly and annual wages for all commercial divers (SOC 49-9092). The 2025 national median was $72,990 a year, and the 90th percentile was $157,790.

How do you become a saturation diver? ↓

Divers typically work as a tender, then an air diver and mixed-gas diver for several years before company saturation training. The ADCI Bell/Saturation Diver card requires at least 200 field days as an air or mixed-gas diver, 100 working dives, 30 days supporting bell/saturation operations, and 10 bell runs.
