How to Become a Commercial Diver on the Gulf Coast (2026)
Most U.S. commercial diving jobs are on the Gulf Coast, and the route in is well defined: accredited school, dive physical, then work as a tender before breaking out as a diver. Here is each step, with costs and rules from primary sources.
To become a commercial diver on the Gulf Coast, complete an accredited commercial diving program of at least 625 hours (the minimum for the ADCI entry-level card)[1], pass a commercial dive physical[8], and start as a tender before working up to diver. Programs near the Gulf take roughly 5 to 7 months; published private tuition is about $27,000 to $29,000[7][11][12].
01. The route in, step by step
- 01Meet the basics. Schools typically require a high school diploma or GED and age 18; SoLAcc also asks for Open Water SCUBA certification[9].
- 02Pass a commercial dive physical. The ADCI-style exam includes spirometry, blood work, urinalysis, an audiogram, an ECG at the first exam (and yearly after 35) and a chest X-ray every three years[8].
- 03Complete an accredited program. ADCI requires at least 625 documented hours at an accredited school, with training aligned to ANSI/ACDE-01-2015. Recreational cards (PADI, NAUI) do not count[1].
- 04Get your entry-level card. Graduates of qualifying programs apply for the ADCI entry-level tender/diver card[1][9][12]. For international work, IMCA recognizes ADCI surface-supplied certificates only when marked “International Endorsement”[5].
- 05Work as a tender. Tenders run the umbilical and equipment topside. Ocean Corp puts average tender pay at about $66,145[14]. Tenders may wait “anywhere from several months to two or more years” before breaking out as a diver[15].
- 06Add qualifications. Mixed-gas, NDT inspection and underwater welding raise pay; saturation comes later (see Saturation Diver Day Rate).

03. The rules that govern commercial diving
- •OSHA 29 CFR 1910 Subpart T covers commercial diving in U.S. waters; it does not cover instructional, public-safety or scientific diving[2]. Section 1910.410 requires training in tools, diving modes, emergency procedures, CPR/first aid and dive physics, and a designated person in charge at the dive site[3].
- •U.S. Coast Guard 46 CFR Part 197, Subpart B applies to commercial diving from vessels and facilities under Coast Guard jurisdiction[4].
- •ADCI (Association of Diving Contractors International, based in Houston) sets entry-level training requirements and issues the certification cards divers carry as they progress, from tender to bell/saturation diver[1].
04. Job outlook and pay after training
O*NET rates the outlook for commercial divers as “much faster than average” (7% or higher) for 2024–2034, with about 400 projected openings and 4,200 people employed in 2024[13]. The 2025 national median wage is $72,990[13].
